Plat Paysan by Grady Atkins, Bloc Coffee, Cardiff

On August 3, 2019 by The Plate Licked Clean

Grady Atkins’ Paysan residency at Canton’s Bloc Coffee has been a big hit this summer. Former head chef at Le Gallois, (late Arbenning, now Heaney’s) and named in interviews as ‘mentor’ by the man the Guardian called ‘Britain’s Hottest Chef‘, Tomos ‘Brat’ Parry, he has vast experience of kitchens the world over. Friday nights have Read More

Leyli Joon and Co Supperclub, Tramshed, Cardiff

On July 28, 2019 by The Plate Licked Clean

I’ve been wanting to try Leyli Joon’s cooking for a good while now, a situation only heightened by m’colleague Soliciting Flavours’ love letter to his December meal last year, all wrapped up in a righteous grumble about how Christmas meals out typically offer little of interest. (I couldn’t help but envy him: working in education, Read More

Ember by John Cook: Milk and Sugar/Llaeth y Siwgr, The Old Library, Cardiff

On May 11, 2019 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘For everything (Turn, turn, turn) There is a season (Turn, turn, turn) And a time to every purpose Under heaven… A time to be born, a time to die A time to plant, a time to reap…’ There’s a whole series of blog posts to be written on the music on restaurants, and the way Read More

Keralan Karavan pop up, Cardiff

On January 10, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

Spiceberry is dead; long live Spiceberry. Well, almost. The recently closed restaurant in Caroline Street has long been a favourite, a kind of best-kept secret among local diners. It was the kind of place you either loved, or hadn’t tried yet. Previous visits made a big impression while Pramod Nair was head chef, here and Read More

JOL’s Street Food Company

On September 14, 2014 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘If you build it, they will come…’ Alternatively, if you wait long enough, someone will do what you can’t, and make moves to establish a real street food culture in this here city. Photo: Jordan Harris I’ve moaned before about the comparative dearth of options in Cardiff, especially when stacked up against what’s on offer Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
