Picton & Co, Mermaid Quay, Cardiff: review

On July 20, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘The only Godfather line I know is ‘Say hello to my little friend,” she says. Clearly, today’s trip to Everyman Cinema is both educational and long overdue: and lunch will be here at Picton and Co, on the edge of Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay. Historically the area has been a byword for slim pickings, Read More

Chennai Dosa, Canton, Cardiff: restaurant review

On March 10, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

Chennai Dosa arrives in Cardiff as a fully-formed idea. With branches as far afield as Birmingham, Coventry, Manchester, Croydon, Leicester and more, the prospect of their take on Southern Indian meets Sri Lankan cooking might have a few local rivals worried. Based on my two visits, they shouldn’t lose any sleep, at least not until Read More

Fallow, St James, London: restaurant review

On December 22, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

A confession- you Proper Foodies, prepare to clutch those pearls- but a restaurant’s claims around sustainability, whether genuine or just PR window dressing, don’t loom large when I’m choosing where to eat. When the language around a place is dominated by ‘sustainability credentials’, I find myself rolling my eyes and muttering YES BUT TELL ME Read More

Mini Kitchen , Cathays, Cardiff: Chinese restaurant review

On August 28, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

Google has Cathays’ Mini Kitchen as part of Fortune House a couple of doors away. Ignore that: it isn’t, and the menu is a world away from chicken balls, pork chow mein and special fried rice topped with scarlet-sauced sliced meat: Chinese food through a British filter. This is something else altogether. Much of the Read More

Jianghu Chinese restaurant, Cathays, Cardiff: review

On July 1, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

A letting agency with Mandarin signage, Long Fang bakery, CKJ’s busy shelves: there’s a theme developing on this stretch of Woodville Road. The newly-opened Jianghu is seconds from Zi’s Cafe and just round the corner from So Good, with which it has much in common. The former Irie Shack (the bathroom doors are still labelled Read More

Castello Grill House, City Road, Cardiff: review

On May 27, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

A wasted lunchtime trip to a new place- here’s an idea, chaps, update your opening hours online- on a warm late May day brings me to City Road, with no fixed plans of where to eat. Some window-shopping for my stomach, then, and Castello’s menu is instantly appealing. Besides, is there a better way to Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
