Khalid’s Kitchen, Hastings: Middle Eastern restaurant review

On February 16, 2025 by The Plate Licked Clean

The sign outside Hastings’ Priory Meadow lists its high-profile residents. M&S, Primark, H and M. Boots, Superdrug, JD Sports: heavyweights of British retail. What’s missing is a flashing neon arrow and three foot high letters pointing to the place which has brought me back twice in two days. Something along the lines of ‘KHALID’S KITCHEN: Read More

Onja Taste of Tanzania: Cardiff City centre restaurant review

On January 30, 2025 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘Would you like more lamb?’ Godfrey offers. ‘Just so you don’t have to waste that bit of rice.’ As if. My first Tanzanian meal at Onja had already put me in a good mood. For a few minutes I had forgotten the ache in my back and my feet complaining about being on them for Read More

Lunch at Ember at No.5, Pontcanna, Cardiff: restaurant review

On January 9, 2025 by The Plate Licked Clean

Ember at No. 5. Dave Killick, Tommy Heaney. You know the deal by now, I’m sure. Pontcanna, nose to tail eating, pasta, frequently changing menus. It’s an eye-catching an opening as Cardiff has had for some time. With Uisce and Heaney’s, Ember At No. 5 forms the third point of The Tommy Triangle, a mystical Read More

ASIAD, Porthcawl: restaurant review

On December 2, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

The former Cosy Corner’s rebrand (Asiad is ‘Asian’ in Welsh/Cymraeg), puts their love of the area’s flavours right to the fore. Inspiration comes from all over Asia- you might find Thai, Singaporean, Korean, Malaysian, Vietnamese, whatever takes their fancy on a frequently-changing menu. More importantly you’ll find no slavery to ‘authenticity’ here, just a love Read More

Cardiff: Where To Eat on Mondays

On November 9, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘There’s just nowhere to eat in Cardiff on a Monday!’ It’s a familiar complaint on a night when the keen diner is notoriously short of options. It’s the perennial question: where to eat out- and eat well- when local hospitality takes a post weekend-rush breather? So here’s your answer to ‘There’s nowhere open!’: sixty-odd of Read More

Kachun (卡村饭馆 Cardiff Restaurant) Salisbury Road: review

On November 2, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

There’s no denying East Asian food is having a moment in Cardiff right now. Here on Salisbury Road alone you’ll find Savour, Mini Kitchen, Hong Kong café North Point and the Taiwanese QBAO. Add the city centre’s Chinese Fast Street Food, and Jianghu less than half a mile away in Cathays, and the city’s options Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
