Bar 44 Tapas y Copas, Westgate St, Cardiff

On June 19, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

We all enjoy a game of Bullsh*t Bingo, don’t we? Those interminable in-work meetings during which your last hope of clinging to sanity resides in ticking off those clichés as they dribble like effluent from the highest-paid person in the room. You sit, buttock-clenched, checking off those old ‘favourites’. Moving forward from. Drilling down into. You’ll have Read More

On April 3, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

As birthday presents go, this year’s was a bit of a bobby dazzler. I am notoriously difficult to buy for- if I like something I’ll buy it myself, which makes surprising me with a gift a bit of a challenge. Birthdays and Christmases roll around and my family groans. Inwardly, most of the time, which Read More

The Beefy Boys – The Wellington, Hereford pop-up

On March 12, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

For some reason I’ve been thinking about Frankie Howerd today, so in best Lurcio style: THE PROLOGUE. If news of The Beefy Boys’ imminent arrival in Cardiff doesn’t quicken your pulse, gladden your heart and put a spring in your whatnot, you might well consider dialling for an ambulance. Now. To borrow a sporting metaphor Read More

Calabrisella, Canton, Cardiff

On March 8, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Anyone running the rule over Tripadvisor recently could be forgiven for thinking Italian food in Cardiff is enjoying something of a revival. Three of the top four slots are occupied thus: city centre favourite Cafe Citta at four, overtaken by recently reviewed- and very good- Il Pastificio on Wellfield Road. The runner-up for the entire Read More

Bao? Wow!

On February 2, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Yes, I know I don’t post much home cooking stuff on this thing. And yes, I’m conscious of the fact the pun in the title filches the name of the now-closed place on Baldwin St in Bristol. But I’ve been borderline obsessed with gua bao since meeting them at KERB in 2013- specifically, the tiny-but-punching-way-above-its-weight Read More

Chai St, Canton, Cardiff

On January 26, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Like a phoenix from the ashes… Chai Street in its original incarnation was a bold move. A new concept, an intriguing new direction for the trailblazing Mint and Mustard under Anand George. It quickly became a firm favourite with many, but things changed and the decision was taken to expand Mint and Mustard into Chai Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
