Jonray Sanchez-Iglesias: 1983-2015

On November 22, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

I’m too long in the tooth to expect life to be fair, but sometimes you hear news which strikes you as so plain unjust that you wince. It’s so wrong that an immensely talented chef like Jonray has gone so young: it’s heartbreaking to think of Olive and Bella, on whom he absolutely doted, losing Read More

Tayyabs, Whitechapel, London

On September 27, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Tayyabs seems to have a strong foothold in popular folklore as one of those places you just have to try. As a result it is noisy, hot and crowded. Tayyabs is famously BYOB- sweetest of all acronyms- and having drawn a blank on the haul from the Tube, we happened upon Shelly Food and Wine Read More

The Ox, Corn St, Bristol

On September 13, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

As far as hiding your light under a bushel goes, The Ox takes some beating in the self-effacement stakes. Lurking beneath a Wetherspoons in Bristol’s historically grand Corn St, with only a nameless brass plate above the door, you descend spiralling marble steps to enter a kind of subterranean gloom which makes decent photographs impossible Read More

The Bunch of Grapes, Pontypridd

On September 8, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Sometimes the best things are right under your nose. This was a perfect storm of circumstances, really: my admission I had never been to The Bunch of Grapes was greeted with incredulity by a regular. A few days later, their stall at Cardiff Brewfest was serving classic pub dishes which went down very well; and Read More

Purple Poppadom, Canton, Cardiff : street food menu

On August 30, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Anand George’s new lunchtime menu venture puts his recent foray into street food front and centre. Fresh from feeding the Street Food Circus hordes- up to 200 servings a (frenzied) hour, apparently- lunchtimes now see the concept extended to an in-house setting. What’s on offer is not limited to their SFC menu. Within the familiar Read More

Honest Burgers, Brixton Market, London

On August 23, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

You could lose hours in Brixton Village. A bustling, gaudy microcosm of London, with flags familiar and unfamiliar draped from the roof, and stalls with baskets piled high with fascinating produce from near and far, people from every corner milling around. It thrums with life and seems custom-built to give a Daily Mail reader an Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
