Lee Skeet announces new Milkwood popup ’40 Days 40 Nights’

On October 4, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Very quickly last year, Lee Skeet made his Bones Supper Club the most impressive new place to eat in Cardiff. He did it the hard way, too. No paid PR. No invitation evenings. He just cooked and let his food do the talking. Remarkable regional produce, a chef of Lee’s experience and skill, cooking for Read More

Snufflers, Barocco, Cardiff

On September 28, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Barocco on Wharton St is no longer just another city chain bar.  Now under independent ownership, free from the yoke of Brains Brewery, it is also home to brand new pop up Snufflers.  The kitchen is run by Max and Shaun, who have done their time in some well respected kitchens across the city- Bar Read More

Malai Thai, Caroline St, Cardiff: set lunch review

On September 24, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Caroline Street’s Malai calls itself a Thai takeaway. That sells it short: although indoor space is limited to three little tables, they are well worth nabbing. The draw is the £6.99 Lunch Special [EDIT: now £8.99] menu, rather charmingly handwritten in the window.  It couldn’t be less like the similarly green and gold-liveried The Ivy, Read More

Manteca, Soho, London: review

On September 10, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

You’ll find Manteca off Poland St, your doorway to Soho and a welcome break from the manic throngs of Oxford St. It calls itself ‘nose to tail’ British-Italian but that’s as far as the buzzwords go. Fans of 84-page restaurant mission statements will find meagre pickings here: Manteca is less interested in parading fashionable credentials Read More

Lunch at The Potted Pig, Cardiff

On August 26, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Fat little cockles and nuggets of bacon are tumbled on to toast, itself generously slathered with laverbread and sodden with those salty, silky juices. It feels like a peculiarly Welsh pleasure, a bracing walk on a Pembrokeshire beach: ozone in the air, but without that annoying family with their litter and their screeching at each Read More

Smokin’ Griddle, Canton, Cardiff: review

On August 20, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

This Canton branch of Smokin’ Griddle follows Swansea to become their second on Wales. Originating in Romford in 2012, you may already know them from their brief stint at Sticky Fingers . You could be forgiven for being reminded of US imports like 5 Guys, whether it’s the huge serving of fries or the brown Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
