Pierogi, Cardiff Market: review

On March 18, 2022 by The Plate Licked Clean

“I want to say those are better pierogi than my grandmother’s!” he says. ‘Don’t say that!’, she replies, half laughing, half in mock horror. Good customer feedback to get on your second day open, no? From someone who grew up with the things, rather than some arsehole blogger with his Influential Opinions. Still, who doesn’t Read More

Woodsmoke, snoring and a £30 tin of tuna: Las Conservas Güeyu Mar

On February 21, 2022 by The Plate Licked Clean

Snoring is like stupidity: you don’t know you’re a sufferer until someone points it out. So depending on your perspective I am either a terrible snorer, as several special friends have been kind enough to remark over the years, or absolutely fantastic at it. I mean world class. Really- a virtuoso. A baleful combination of Read More

Fizz’n’Flour Pizza, Canton, Cardiff: review

On January 23, 2022 by The Plate Licked Clean

So here on the Canton Food Mile is Fizz’n’Flour, Cardiff’s latest pizza place. It’s another example of the locally dominant style, but there’s a lot to like: besides, this end of Canton was an absolute priority for good Neapolitan pizza.  By which I mean, it’s near the school run.  Fizz’n’Flour started as a lockdown project Read More

Nadu, Stokes Croft, Bristol review

On November 15, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

To describe dinner at Nadu as mixed would give the wrong impression, perhaps. There were many good things to eat, some very good indeed, some just a tweak away from truly outstanding. Which in its own way was frustrating. Nadu is the second opening from the team behind Clifton’s Nutmeg. This isn’t more of their regional Read More

The Humble Onion, Dinas Powys: October 2021 revisit

On October 17, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Have you been to The Humble Onion recently? You should.  Two visits in the last fortnight have confirmed what has been obvious for a few years now. Namely, that Antonio Simone’s cooking is a true local highlight and deserves to be celebrated in that way.. The ‘Humble at Home’ boxes were a lockdown highlight, the Read More

Don Don Yatai Japanese café, Ely, Cardiff: review

On October 7, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

If I asked you to guess where I found Cardiff’s newest Japanese café, I’d probably have time to go make a cuppa- and finish it, too- before you came up with the right answer.  But here on Ely’s Cowbridge Road West, opposite and half way between the former hospital and the Fire Station, is the Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
