Mint & Mustard, Penarth

On January 22, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘Keralan Passion, Britsh Style’ runs the legend over the bar in the new Mint and Mustard, Penarth. With the acquisition of a new chef, ex-Dishoom and Bombay Brasserie, this is a high-profile and well-situated addition to Penarth’s town centre, being only an enthusiastically hoiked patata brava from the estimable Bar 44. There’s an expansive selection on offer, Read More

Porro, Llandaff, Cardiff

On January 17, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

Sat on Llandaff’s High Street, Porro comes trailing clouds of glory thanks to its big sister in the city centre, The Potted Pig. Straight off the bat, they proclaim their love of local food served with a love of Italy; they serve ‘Italian-ish’ food, rather than devote themselves to the slavishly myopic quest for the Read More

Keralan Karavan pop up, Cardiff

On January 10, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

Spiceberry is dead; long live Spiceberry. Well, almost. The recently closed restaurant in Caroline Street has long been a favourite, a kind of best-kept secret among local diners. It was the kind of place you either loved, or hadn’t tried yet. Previous visits made a big impression while Pramod Nair was head chef, here and Read More

Shake Shack, St David’s 2, Cardiff

On December 22, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Occupying a prime slab of city centre real  estate on the first floor of St David’s 2, Shake Shack is brand new- as I write this, it’s been open for less than three hours- and is their first UK branch outside London, extending the narrative of Cardiff as somewhere even star ‘brands’- hello Burger and Lobster, Read More

Laguna Restaurant and Bar, The Park Plaza, Cardiff: Chef’s Table tasting menu review

On December 13, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

An evening get-together with other local blogging types- take a bow, The Little Nomad, The Jady Brunch, The Rare Welsh Bit and Explore With Ed- with complimentary cocktails and free food. It’s a dirty job, etc etc. Hell, if a man who has cooked for Springsteen wants to cook for me, I won’t put up Read More

The Bunch of Grapes, Pontypridd

On September 8, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Sometimes the best things are right under your nose. This was a perfect storm of circumstances, really: my admission I had never been to The Bunch of Grapes was greeted with incredulity by a regular. A few days later, their stall at Cardiff Brewfest was serving classic pub dishes which went down very well; and Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
