The Longs Arms, Upper South Wraxall, Wiltshire: restaurant review

On October 25, 2017 by The Plate Licked Clean

Meandering country lanes? Check. Dog bowl on the floor? Check. ‘Bob’s eggs, £1’ from a few doors up, next to an honesty box on the bar? Check. A pre-starter of hot, sour lobster soup from a stock of real depth and character, punchy with Thai flavours? Homemade bread, homemade butter, a rich canary yellow? A Read More

Root, Cargo, Wapping Wharf, Bristol

On October 17, 2017 by The Plate Licked Clean

So after a break, we are back- for a blogger who doesn’t blog is of scant use to anyone- with ‘simple but interesting food’ from Root at Wapping Wharf. It’s a ‘small plates which appear as and when’ deal here, in this renovated shipping container on the upper level of the box park on Bristol Read More

Lunya, Liverpool ONE

On August 9, 2017 by The Plate Licked Clean

And so to Liverpool. I fell in love with this city many years ago, with its pride and its humour and its grit and its grandeur, its resilience, its defiance in the face of governmental neglect and southern disdain. In England, but certainly Scouse before ‘English’. It gets under your skin, this place. This is Read More

Bellita, Cotham Hill, Bristol

On July 31, 2017 by The Plate Licked Clean

Bellita is the younger sister of Bristol stalwart Bell’s Diner and sits squarely in the ‘throw a stick and hit somewhere good to eat’ enclave of Cotham Hill. The name works on a personal level, too: it’s what my four year old used to call my mother, her first approximation of  ‘Abuelita‘, which I take Read More

Mowgli, Water St, Liverpool

On June 2, 2017 by The Plate Licked Clean

I’ve been following the career of Nisha Katona with interest for some time now. The ‘barrister to “curry evangelist”, broadcaster and restaurateur’ path isn’t an especially well-worn trajectory and Mowgli Water Street is the second instalment of her rapidly expanding vision. Manchester followed soon after, Birmingham is imminent. Others are planned: she is clearly a Read More

Lasan, St Paul’s Square, Birmingham

On May 14, 2017 by The Plate Licked Clean

Lasan will be no stranger to the sofa-loving foodnerd: since he opened it at the age of 22, head chef Aktar Islam has been a regular on Great British Menu, cooking at the final banquet, and Lasan has featured in the Sunday Times’ 100 UK’s Best and won Gordon Ramsay’s ‘F Word’ accolade for Best Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
