There was a time, and it doesn’t feel so very long ago, when Cardiff was a craft beer desert. City-wide, It Was Brains You Wanted; and even if you didn’t, alternatives were usually uninspiring. Now, of course, everyone knows their Cloudwater from Carling and Beavertown from their Bud, and we all bore on about our Read More
You. Yes, you. You’re glossy of mane, resolute of purpose and firm of thigh; you know your béarnaise from your bolognese (or your Bovril, for that matter). You know that cutting thick tranches from a cauliflower doesn’t justify calling them ‘steaks’. You know that serving small portions of assorted world cuisines doesnt equal ‘tapas’. You Read More
I’ve been following the career of Nisha Katona with interest for some time now. The ‘barrister to “curry evangelist”, broadcaster and restaurateur’ path isn’t an especially well-worn trajectory and Mowgli Water Street is the second instalment of her rapidly expanding vision. Manchester followed soon after, Birmingham is imminent. Others are planned: she is clearly a Read More
Open since summer 2016, Oxwich Bay’s The Beach House has enviably illustrious antecedents as part of the Grove (Narberth) and Coast (Saundersfoot) Head Chef Hywel Griffith, formerly of Ynyshir Hall and Paul Heathcote’s Longridge, heads up a small team of warm and welcoming staff. A series of guest chef evenings and collaborative events with the Read More
It’s odd how little details in restaurants influence you. I was once in a place where an app enabled the customers to programme the playlist. Half an hour later, after wall-to-wall U2, your mild-mannered correspondent was ready to bludgeon the nearest kitten. Which brings us to Cardiff’s latest word of mouth success story. Blue Honey Read More
Lasan will be no stranger to the sofa-loving foodnerd: since he opened it at the age of 22, head chef Aktar Islam has been a regular on Great British Menu, cooking at the final banquet, and Lasan has featured in the Sunday Times’ 100 UK’s Best and won Gordon Ramsay’s ‘F Word’ accolade for Best Read More
This blog is a very simple thing.
I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes. You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.
I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.
A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.
From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
