Hiraeth Kitchen, Llysworney, Cowbridge: restaurant review

On June 11, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

I’m not in a good mood by the time I arrive at Hiraeth Kitchen. Any balm dispensed by the bus ride from Cardiff- a timely reminder of just how beautiful the Vale can be- is lost when I try to find a taxi from Cowbridge. Apparently the Gordian knot, Fermat’s Last Theorem and the continuing Read More

Castello Grill House, City Road, Cardiff: review

On May 27, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

A wasted lunchtime trip to a new place- here’s an idea, chaps, update your opening hours online- on a warm late May day brings me to City Road, with no fixed plans of where to eat. Some window-shopping for my stomach, then, and Castello’s menu is instantly appealing. Besides, is there a better way to Read More

Gurkha Hill Nepalese restaurant, Llantwit Fardre: review

On May 22, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

Give me word of mouth any day. Give me those recommendations from people who have spent their own money and left happy. Of course, the apparatus of PR can be vital for new launches: but send me your genuine love for your local place, the one you keep going back to. Combine that with some Read More

Maison de Boeuf, Cardiff: review

On May 17, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

There’s only one main dish, complains the passerby, peering at the menu and walking away. Well, fair play to him. He’s grasped the essence of Maison de Boeuf. Welcome to one of Cardiff’s smallest menus, though nothing beats the pared-back ‘chicken, lamb or nothing’ minimalism of The South Kitchen. Maison de Boeuf is built around Read More

Cardiff: a week’s worth of city centre independent set lunch deals

On May 14, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

Here’s the idea: all independents, enough for a week’s worth; all with ‘proper meal’ set lunch deals at a range of prices. All tried and tested, of course. (And a bonus couple, because I live to give). Crucially, all are open every weekday. Which means, of course, that you can rotate to your heart’s- and Read More

Wilson’s, Bristol: set lunch review

On May 5, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

How do you make a brilliant restaurant even better? Well, you do lunch for £25. You serve up five courses of remarkably poised, seductively accomplished cooking in laid-back style, and you do it with warmth. For £25, in case you missed it. Here on Chandos Road it has long been easy to eat well. Very Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
