Mezza Luna, City Rd, Cardiff

On July 17, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

A long room where the eye is drawn to the flames of the charcoal grill, Mezza Luna offers a menu influenced by both Lebanese and Moroccan traditions. And if that sounds unusual, then perhaps uniquely among the grill houses on City Road, there is alcohol on offer. I tried a crisp Lebanese Almaza pilsener. My Read More

Mr Villa’s, The Knap, Barry: review

On July 2, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

A little run of shopfronts near Barry’s Cold Knap is where you’ll find Mr Villa’s. Open since last November, it bills itself as a fish and chips restaurant and oyster bar. That doesn’t do it justice. The tables hold old-school vinegar and salt; the broad white and blue stripes, whitewashed walls, unfinished concrete floor, open Read More

I Giardini Di Sorrento, City Road, Cardiff

On July 1, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

I Giardini di Sorrento bills itself as ‘Coffee House-Bar-Kitchen’, though that doesn’t really do it justice. It’s certainly not formal dining, and as such it fits in well on City Road, but this isn’t a café knocking out a few token sandwiches as an afterthought. Today’s specials of lobster and T-bone are a giveaway, though Read More

The Dock, Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay

On May 20, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

The Dock is Brains’ grand statement in Cardiff Bay, a seven-figure refurbishment of the old Terra Nova. Oh, I loathed Terra Nova. Hated it with an intensity bordering on the visceral. I had too many dreary nights in its overcrowded, dingy corners. And it was always where we had our work do, and the food Read More

Dusty Knuckle Pizza, Canton

On April 28, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

This, right here, is stone cold proof of the burgeoning street food culture in Cardiff. It’s a story of people backing their gut, their passion, and making things happen. That Dusty Knuckle have made the transition from popup to permanent in the courtyard of local brewers Crafty Devil, who themselves seem to have gone from Read More

Zi’s Café, Woodville Road, Cardiff

On April 17, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

Zi’s Cafe is one of those places. Places which aren’t social media stars, places which are notable by their absence in the self-promotion stakes, but places which you hear praised and recommended far too often for that acclaim to be groundless. It shouldn’t have taken me this long to try it. Now next door to their Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
