Fizz’n’Flour Pizza, Canton, Cardiff: review

On January 23, 2022 by The Plate Licked Clean

So here on the Canton Food Mile is Fizz’n’Flour, Cardiff’s latest pizza place. It’s another example of the locally dominant style, but there’s a lot to like: besides, this end of Canton was an absolute priority for good Neapolitan pizza.  By which I mean, it’s near the school run.  Fizz’n’Flour started as a lockdown project Read More

The Humble Onion, Dinas Powys: October 2021 revisit

On October 17, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Have you been to The Humble Onion recently? You should.  Two visits in the last fortnight have confirmed what has been obvious for a few years now. Namely, that Antonio Simone’s cooking is a true local highlight and deserves to be celebrated in that way.. The ‘Humble at Home’ boxes were a lockdown highlight, the Read More

Don Don Yatai Japanese café, Ely, Cardiff: review

On October 7, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

If I asked you to guess where I found Cardiff’s newest Japanese café, I’d probably have time to go make a cuppa- and finish it, too- before you came up with the right answer.  But here on Ely’s Cowbridge Road West, opposite and half way between the former hospital and the Fire Station, is the Read More

Lee Skeet announces new Milkwood popup ’40 Days 40 Nights’

On October 4, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Very quickly last year, Lee Skeet made his Bones Supper Club the most impressive new place to eat in Cardiff. He did it the hard way, too. No paid PR. No invitation evenings. He just cooked and let his food do the talking. Remarkable regional produce, a chef of Lee’s experience and skill, cooking for Read More

Snufflers, Barocco, Cardiff

On September 28, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Barocco on Wharton St is no longer just another city chain bar.  Now under independent ownership, free from the yoke of Brains Brewery, it is also home to brand new pop up Snufflers.  The kitchen is run by Max and Shaun, who have done their time in some well respected kitchens across the city- Bar Read More

Bread and Salt, Canton, Cardiff

On August 2, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

What comes to mind when you think of Polish food? Dumplings and breaded things, ham hocks and sauerkraut, perhaps: plates groaning with buttery, creamy stuff, good beers and smoked sausages with mustard. A national obsession with pork which chimes hard with my roots. Rich, carby heft to see you through harsh months: heavy fuel, insulation against Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
