Snufflers, Barocco, Cardiff

On September 28, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Barocco on Wharton St is no longer just another city chain bar.  Now under independent ownership, free from the yoke of Brains Brewery, it is also home to brand new pop up Snufflers.  The kitchen is run by Max and Shaun, who have done their time in some well respected kitchens across the city- Bar Read More

Bread and Salt, Canton, Cardiff

On August 2, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

What comes to mind when you think of Polish food? Dumplings and breaded things, ham hocks and sauerkraut, perhaps: plates groaning with buttery, creamy stuff, good beers and smoked sausages with mustard. A national obsession with pork which chimes hard with my roots. Rich, carby heft to see you through harsh months: heavy fuel, insulation against Read More

La Cuina, Pontcanna, Cardiff: 2020 review

On January 9, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Perhaps it’s the tucked-away location on Kings Road, but La Cuina is very much one of those ‘if you know, you know’ places: it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Founder Montserrat Prat has made nothing less than a cosy little Catalan-influenced nook in Pontcanna, one which does what it does consistently well. An obvious Read More

Afrikana, City Road, Cardiff

On December 18, 2020 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘I always recommend this fried chicken and everyone loves it!’ says my server, in this, perhaps the least ‘City Road’ venue on City Road. You know what comes next, don’t you? A full-blooded, studs-first dismantling of the menu and the place. It’s a chain after all, and a rapidly-expanding one. That’s not the sort of Read More

Ansh burgers, Victoria Park, Cardiff: review

On November 16, 2020 by The Plate Licked Clean

Here’s a prediction, a happy one in this chaotic, miserable year: you’re going to hear more and more people telling you how good the burgers at Ansh are.  Ansh is Welsh through and through. Not just in name (‘Bite’), but the inspiration for each burger writ large. That sense of regional identity is explicit, from Read More

Bones Supperclub by Lee Skeet, Cardiff

On October 11, 2020 by The Plate Licked Clean

I’ve wanted to try Lee Skeet’s cooking for years now, so this latest opportunity was a must. Bones Supperclub is a private supper club where he cooks for just one reservation per night, in his home. You book online, you discuss any must-haves or won’ts and can’ts and he sends you the address the day Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
