Shake Shack, St David’s 2, Cardiff

On December 22, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Occupying a prime slab of city centre real  estate on the first floor of St David’s 2, Shake Shack is brand new- as I write this, it’s been open for less than three hours- and is their first UK branch outside London, extending the narrative of Cardiff as somewhere even star ‘brands’- hello Burger and Lobster, Read More

Laguna Restaurant and Bar, The Park Plaza, Cardiff: Chef’s Table tasting menu review

On December 13, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

An evening get-together with other local blogging types- take a bow, The Little Nomad, The Jady Brunch, The Rare Welsh Bit and Explore With Ed- with complimentary cocktails and free food. It’s a dirty job, etc etc. Hell, if a man who has cooked for Springsteen wants to cook for me, I won’t put up Read More

Purple Poppadom, Canton, Cardiff : street food menu

On August 30, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Anand George’s new lunchtime menu venture puts his recent foray into street food front and centre. Fresh from feeding the Street Food Circus hordes- up to 200 servings a (frenzied) hour, apparently- lunchtimes now see the concept extended to an in-house setting. What’s on offer is not limited to their SFC menu. Within the familiar Read More

Anna-Loka, Albany Road, Cardiff

On August 16, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

I was feeling like a stranger in a strange land. Like a Fallout vault dweller, blinking their way into a new world… Cards on table, especially if you’re not a regular reader: I love my meat. There’s a fair chance I’d love yours, too. Those sticky bits in the tray after a lamb roast? Those Read More

The Cambrian Tap, St Mary St, Cardiff

On August 6, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

The former Kitty Flynn’s on the junction of Caroline St and St Mary St has recently undergone a two-month makeover. Goodbye, walls of that indeterminate shade known as ‘Ancient Pub Yellow’. Farewell, dingy ceilings. Welcome, exposed brickwork, chalk boards, hanging lighbulbs. This is Brains’ showcase for the Craft label arm of the operation. A break Read More

Shaam Nights, City Road, Cardiff

On July 21, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

What is the meaning of human existence ? Is there life after death? What can we really know? What is love?  From the beginnings of civilisation such questions have been the life’s work of our finest minds, our greatest philosophers and poets. Descartes. Wittgenstein. Nietszche. Haddaway. To these, we must add a thorny issue question to tax Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
